Musical Links Investigation
Gustav Holst's I love my love and Jean de Brefeuf's Huron Carol or Twas' in the Moon of Wintertieme
I am going to be investigating the links between I love my love by Gustav Holst, and English a cappella folksong and Twas in the Moon of Wintertime or Huron Carol by Jean de Brébeuf, a Canadian Christmas hymn. These pieces have two distinct cultures; early 20th century England,
and 1600’s carols with influences from traditional French folk
songs.
I will investigate the links between harmony, form, as well as the melody of the pieces. Both pieces have some sort of call and response pattern between the women and men, and a single melody line that is added to it which is repeated; example-in Twas in the Moon of Wintertime the men start out with the melody and the women add in with harmony.
Versions I am using:
I love my love- Holst
Twas' in the Moon of Wintertime- Brebeuf
Both are sung by the Cambridge Singers and are a cappella.
